9 Reasons Every Business Should Hire a Copywriter

People laughing at great copy

The first thing I tell people about copy is that it is everywhere.

This — these words — is copy. The captions on your Instagram feed are copy. So is the word Milk on your milk carton, as well as everything written beneath it, around it, behind it. Maybe the paragraphs on page 212 of that novel you’ve meant to be reading aren’t copy, but you can be sure the ones that actually got you to pick up that book — across the cover, in the jacket flap, on the recommendation sign at your local book store — are.

In a world where we can communicate across continents in an instant, copy is how a business speaks with customers they may never meet. Copy is the voice that represents your brand. It is your sales pitch, your trumpet, your bugle.

Copy is very, very important.

Can You Write Your Own Copy?

Well, yeah. Obviously. But should you?

Here’s the way I like to explain it: What separates a great copywriter from your average, run-of-the-mill writer is the same thing that separates a a great salesperson from your average, run-of-the-mill … person.

It doesn’t take much to put pen to pad, nor does it take much to hold up a product and shout, “Buy it!” But it does take a lot to be successful at either.

Hiring a copywriter is hiring a professional, someone who understands the craft of words, messaging, sales, consumer research, branding, search engine optimization, and so much more.

But if you still need some convincing, here are nine reasons I believe every business should be hiring a copywriter.

Why You Should Hire a Copywriter

1. Free Up Time to Do What You Do Best

You’ve already done the hard job of building an upstart business with a winning product or service — do more of that!

So often I see talented entrepreneurs getting bogged down by aspects of their business that don’t suit their skillset. Not all of us are quadruple threats. There’s a reason I share my messages from behind a keyboard and not a podcast mic.

In a report done by Josh Bernoff, he found that 81% of people believe that they waste time reading poorly written material — time, he claims, costs business’s hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

Don’t waste time writing copy that wastes time — that’s wasteful.

2. Always Deliver a Clear Message

You may only get one opportunity in front of a prospective client.

Don’t blow it.

It’s not enough to scream your name out over the city and hope that crowds will form. An Instagram ad that everyone scrolls past or an email campaign that no one opens does you no good.

A great copywriter will understand your brand, your product, and your audience, and they’ll use that knowledge to deliver a clear message that resonates with your customers.

The best place to start is your website’s homepage, where a study by Hubspot found that 67% of customers are most likely to go first to learn about your brand.

3. Create More Content, Content, Content!

We are in the Age of Content. It’s everywhere at all times. But no matter how numerous and simple and silly it all can seem, creating content takes time.

Hire a copywriter to produce your blogs, your eBook, and your email sequences. Hire a copywriter to create your YouTube scripts, your Podcast ads, your social captions, and more.

While Hubspot found that most people still prefer to engage with a brand through their website, plenty are doing so through socials, mixed media, and more.

Hire the copywriter to make the content that you didn’t think you had the time to make.

4. Build A Steady Stream of Organic Traffic

Organic traffic for an online business is the equivalent of having a corner shop on main street. It comes with a steady stream of consistent leads. It builds easy name recognition. And while earning that traffic isn’t entirely free, it’s more cost effective than nearly any other form of marketing.

So, how does a business get it?

It begins by optimizing your site and your content for search engine algorithms — A.K.A. search engine optimization (SEO).

Any copywriter with his or her salt will not only understand this but know how to implement it naturally into your copy so that it helps push you up search engine rankings and deliver your message.

5. Bolster Your Brand with a Consistent Voice

People buy from people, and they buy from brands — they don’t buy from businesses.

This is why Nike spends so much money on athletes to represent them. This is why GEICO commercials rarely have anything to do with car insurance.

Your brand is your business. It’s what your customer thinks of you. It’s how they inform their opinion. And all of it — from the logo to the color scheme to the product design and the copy —plays a role in earning the customer’s trust.

So, you have to be consistent.

A copywriter will help you develop your brand’s voice over all platforms: web, socials, emails, print, radio, and television. The better the customer feels they know your brand, the more they’ll trust it and, by extension, you.

6. Give Your Target Audience What They Want

Listen, sometimes you have to tug on a few heartstrings, dole out a couple candies, to earn a sale. We’re all prone to influence. But how do you do it?

Research.

The only way to give your audience exactly what they want is to know exactly what they need. That means joining their circles, digging through their socials (all of them), braving the message boards, and more

The whos, whats, wheres, whens, and whys — it all matters.

This is the sort of effort that separates a good copywriter from a great copywriter, and it produces the sort of work that’s worth paying for.

7. Find a Partner to Grow Your Business

I’m sure there are some copywriters out there who do it strictly for the bucks. But I’d wager that there are far more who are true creatives — writers and storytellers who care where their words go and what they do.

I know that when I work with clients, I’m always prepping for the long haul. Tell me where you wanna go, share with me all your wildest dreams, and let me help you get there.

Great copy, great marketing, great branding is all about telling a story. That’s what resonates with people.

So, if you’re looking for someone who might be able to help grow your business over time, hire a copywriter — we like to write through the last page.

8. It’s The Cheapest Way to Scale Your Business

A great website will payoff for years to come. Well-written, informative, entertaining, SEO blogs can bring in organic traffic forever. An eBook will sell today, tomorrow, and the next day.

Invest now in a good copywriter and …

9. Make More Money

You are a business after all, so let’s not kid ourselves. The reason you’re going to hire anyone to do anything is because you expect it to pay off double in the end.

Good attitude.

Now, unless you’re already beating customers back with a broom handle (be gentle), then the only way you’re going to find more leads is through copy. That means you can write it yourself or you can partner with an expert.

Up to you.
